Broadband Speed Test

Would you like to test the speed of your Internet connection? If so, this is the page to do it. Your speed is calculated by analyzing the efficiency of a large file download. The results may vary depending on current levels of traffic on the Internet.

The broadband speed test is compatible with cable modems, digital subscriber lines (DSL), integrated services digital network (ISDN) lines, satellite connections, and even a plain old dial-up modem.

Note that what you are testing is not just the speed into your computer, but the speed of the slowest link between you and the test server. For accurate results it is advised that you do not use the computer during the test.

How to translate kilobits (Kb) to Kilobytes (KB)

To begin to understand how bandwidth is measured, you must understand that in its basic form, data is simply zeros and ones. Each zero or one is commonly referred to as a bit. This is common terminology when measuring the speed of a data connection.

Consider that a 368kbps connection is equivalent to a 368000 bit per second connection.

When you are using your browser of file transfer software, you receive a measurement in 'KB/s' (Kilo-Bytes-Per-Second). In order to get 'kbps' (kilo-bits-per-second) you have to perform a simple calculation.

Remember there are 8 bits in a byte and 1024 bytes in a kilobyte.

Therefore:

368000 bits \ 8 = 46000 bytes

46000 bytes \ 1024 = 44.921 Kilobytes.
