Disable File Sharing

File sharing leaves your computer open to a myriad of attacks. Many of these attacks will allow a malicious hacker to have complete read/write access to the contents of your hard-drive. Therefore, it is imperative that you disable file sharing if you do not absolutely need it.

Please choose your operating system below.

Disable file sharing on Windows XP
Disable file sharing on Windows 2000
Disable file sharing on Windows 95/98/ME
Disable file sharing on Windows NT


Disable file sharing on Windows XP

1. Click START then SETTINGS then NETWORK CONNECTIONS.

2. Double-click LOCAL AREA CONNECTIONS.

3. Click PROPERTIES.

4. Be sure that File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Network is
    UNCHECKED.


Disable file sharing on Windows 2000

1. Click START.

2. Select SETTINGS.

3. Click NETWORK AND DIAL-UP CONNECTIONS.

4. Double click on LOCAL AREA CONNECTIONS.

5. Click on PROPERTIES.

6. Be sure File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Network
    is NOT CHECKED.

7. Click OK.

8. Close all windows and restart your computer.


Disable file sharing on Windows 95/98/ME

1. Double-click the MY COMPUTER icon on your desktop.

2. Double-click the CONTROL PANEL icon.

3. Double-click the NETWORK icon.
Select the CONFIGURATION tab and     then click the FILE & PRINT SHARING button.

4. Disable file sharing and print sharing by clicking in the appropriate     boxes to REMOVE checkmarks. Click OK.

5. Select the TCP/IP protocol that is bound to your netword card. Click     PROPERTIES. Then choose the BINDINGS tab.

6. Uncheck the box next to FILE AND PRINTER SHARING FOR     MICROSOFT NETWORKS.

7. Click OK. Click OK again.

8. Click YES to restart your computer and put your changes into effect.


Disable file sharing on Windows NT

1. Double-click on MY COMPUTER

2. Right-click on your hard drive and choose SHARING...

3. Set to NOT SHARED.
